On April 29 & 30, 2022, over 150 participants joined Cahaba River Society for a BioBlitz at Camp Fletcher, an historic outdoor retreat and nature preserve founded in 1926 by Pauline Bray Fletcher, the first African American registered nurse in Alabama, as a haven for inner city Black children and families to explore nature and the outdoors.

Cahaba River Society BioBlitz uncovers 345 different species at historic Camp Fletcher

Over 150 participants recorded over 600 observations of various birds, mammals, fish, reptiles, insects, trees, plants, and other life on the 300-acre Fletcher Nature Preserve at Camp Fletcher, an historic outdoor retreat and nature preserve founded in 1926 by Pauline Bray Fletcher, the first African American registered nurse in Alabama, as a haven for inner city Black children and families to explore nature and the outdoors.

Cahaba River Society hosts BioBlitz at historic Camp Fletcher

Cahaba River Society will host a BioBlitz at historic Camp Fletcher on the banks of Shades Creek in Bessemer. The event will begin with a nighttime survey of moth, bat and amphibian species starting at 6pm on Friday, April 29. On Saturday, April 30, we will continue the BioBlitz from 9 am to 6 pm. There will be activities for all ages, with nature walks, wildlife viewing, and, beginning at 1 pm, special community programs for participatory nature art and creative writing, story-telling, and camp tours.

Join us for the 2022 Camp Fletcher BioBlitz!
Find and identify as many different species as possible in one day and enjoy a family event with nature art, nature poetry, and learning about wildlife.
The BioBlitz is a great way to excite kids about science, learn about biodiversity, discover how you can help protect our natural world, and discover Camp Fletcher as a summer camp opportunity for diverse youth.

Celebrate Gordon Black and honor his 15 years with the CLEAN Program by donating to the Gordon Black Legacy Fund

Gordon has led CLEAN for 15 of the program’s 25 years, bringing over 23,700 students and teachers into the River, or the River into their classroom! Many of these youth went on to embrace environmental careers – like our own Environmental Science Educator, La’Tanya Scott. All of them have a greater connection with natural waters

The Cahaba River Ramble 2021 VIRTUAL Trail Race is an online challenge of 5- and/or 10-mile runs that encourage socially-distant support of runners of all ages.  Runners: Challenge yourselves to either race and go at your own pace. We encourage participants to explore their local outdoor areas, running paths or trails by the river. You can do it
