A moonlit evening on the Cahaba is a delightful, unique, and relaxing way to enjoy a flat water portion of the Cahaba. We usually hear a variety of wildlife, and often see hundreds of glowworms. These outings begin at dusk at the old Highway 280 bridge. We paddle about two hours in the 280 pool and then return to the same place we put in.

Cahaba River Society offers guided float trips on the Cahaba River. We can supply canoes, paddles, life jackets, and a naturalist with the expertise to allow you a unique, up-close experience with the Cahaba River.

Guided Canoe Trip: Perry County Ox Bow Lake Tour

Ox Bows are old river meanders that have been cut off, leaving a naturally-formed lake. The Perry County Lakes are Cahaba River meanders that have grown up into Cypress and Tupelo swamps with lots of Spanish moss and unusual wildlife. We often find freshwater shrimp and other odd invertebrates, bryozoans, carnivorous aquatic plants, and occasionally, an alligator. This is a well-known Birding location. It is a fascinating and beautiful place.. We will meet at 8:30 am at the Colonnade Shopping Center in front of Gold’s Gym.We request a donation of $20 for each person over the age of 12 for the use of our boats and equipment and to cover staff time. For those bringing their own boats, we request a donation of $10 for each person over the age of 12. (There is no cost for children under 12, but everyone under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.) Life vests are required for all participants.

The Cahaba River Fry-Down is a celebration of the Cahaba River – the heart of America's Amazon and our region’s primary drinking water source. This annual competitive cook-off that is usually surrounded by a huge community party is the primary fundraiser for the Cahaba River Society.
