Renew Our Rivers began in 2000 as a community river cleanup organized by Alabama Power employees from Plant Gadsden concerned about litter found along the Coosa River. Founded by Gene Phifer, the program is now one of the nation’s largest river cleanups including river systems across Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia and Florida.

For each cleanup, Alabama Power works with local community partners, volunteers and organizations. Since its inception, more than 110,000 volunteers have removed some 15 million pounds of trash from waterways across the Southeast. In 2017 alone, more than 4,700 volunteers removed more than 295,000 pounds of trash and debris from Alabama waterways.

This year, 30 cleanups are planned through November on the Alabama, Black Warrior, Cahaba, Chattahoochee, Coosa, Mobile and Tallapoosa rivers.

Cahaba National Widlife Refuge, River Trace
West Blocton, AL 35184 United States

You will see the beautiful Cahaba lilies first hand in their natural setting. These are rigorous outings that require wading and dragging a canoe over shallow rocky shoals. When very low water conditions occur, we alter the trip so we still see the lilies and enjoy the river, but we avoid a difficult hike down the riverbed. These are our most popular outings, so call soon to reserve your canoe.
