This week, we’ve shared stories of what the Cahaba River gives us. Now, we invite you to give back to the river. One way of doing that is to support Cahaba River Coalition’s mission to protect and preserve the integrity of the Cahaba River and its watershed.

Our members help protect the river that gives us so much — for today and for generations to come. Join us and be part of this ongoing story. Link to membership is in our bio.
As we continue our “What the River Gives You?” ser As we continue our “What the River Gives You?” series this #GivingTuesday, Bob Marston shared his story with Cahaba River Coalition after attending one of our overnight Recreation trips.

The Cahaba gave Bob “a whole world of experience,” which showed him “that the life I want to lead and the world I want to build are right in front of me”.

Connecting with Nature like the Cahaba River gives us courage, confidence, and new experiences — opening doors we didn’t know existed, or maybe we were simply waiting to walk through them.

Alabama ranks #1 in the U.S. for freshwater richne Alabama ranks #1 in the U.S. for freshwater richness in fish, snails, turtles, and mussels, earning it the nickname “America’s Amazon.” More than 130,000 miles of rivers and streams flow through our state, and the Cahaba River is at the heart of it all.

When we asked our community why they were thankful for the river, nearly every person mentioned the Cahaba’s unmatched biodiversity. Many of the species found in these waters exist nowhere else on Earth.

From these responses came something deeper than a list of creatures. Beyond the water is a sense of wonder, of gratitude, and of awe for a river that gives us more than we often realize. The Cahaba’s biodiversity reminds us not only of what lives here, but of the profound connection we share with this place.
For #GivingTuesday we're asking "What Does the Riv For #GivingTuesday we're asking "What Does the River Give You?" Water might sound like an obvious answer, but did you know an average of 60+ million gallons of water DAILY goes from the Cahaba to the faucets in Birmingham, Homewood, Hoover, Mountain Brook, Vestavia Hills, and surrounding areas?

Dr. Melanie Vines, Engineer of Purification Research and Innovation at Central Alabama Water, not only loves the Cahaba, she’s studied its water for years.

"I like to say that I 'do water' both professionally and recreationally. Drinking water treatment is crucial to the protection of public health, and I work to ensure that we keep innovating to make our water as clean and safe as possible here in the Birmingham metro. I also love spending my free time on the river and have seen firsthand that protecting our river protects both important ecosystems and our drinking water source."
