It seems like the perfect day to shoutout our friends at Urban Turtle Project, who work to document and conserve the turtle populations in the urban waterways of Birmingham, like portions of the Cahaba.

Happy International Day of Biodiversity! On the C Happy International Day of Biodiversity!

On the Cahaba River, every day feels like a celebration of biodiversity. Historically supporting 48 different native freshwater mussel species, 32 different native freshwater snail species, and 135 different fish species, the Cahaba is one of the most diverse waterways on the planet!

These snapshots come from our 2025 BioBlitz at Oak Mountain State Park, where volunteers and naturalists documented 280 species through our iNaturalist project. 🌎🔍📸

Let’s keep the Cahaba wild and teeming with life. Support our mission to protect and restore this river of international importance. Donate at the link in our bio!

This #EndangeredSpeciesDay, we want to highlight s This #EndangeredSpeciesDay, we want to highlight several species that are federally listed as endangered that are found in the Cahaba.

Cahaba shiner (Notropis cahabae)
Cylindrical lioplax (Lioplax cyclostomaformis)
Flat pebblesnai (Lepyrium showalteri)
Southern clubshell (Pleurobema decisum)
Rayed kidneyshell (Ptychobranchus foremanianus)

The primary threat to these species is habitat degradation through sediment and nutrient overloading. Their survival depends on clean water, healthy habitat, and informed action. If we don't act, they could be gone forever.

This Monday, May 19 is the deadline to comment on proposed changes to the government’s interpretation of the Endangered Species Act (ESA).

These changes would dramatically weaken the ESA, our single best means of protecting species that are in danger of forever going extinct. Under the proposed changes, destruction of habitat used by a threatened or endangered species would not count as “harm” to that species, and would not be regulated by the ESA. Only direct killing, injury, harassment, or capture would count as harm.

Public comments are submitted through the Federal Register.

Join us this weekend at the Cahaba Lily Festival t Join us this weekend at the Cahaba Lily Festival to celebrate our favorite flower and an iconic symbol of our river!

When: Saturday, May 17th from 9-5
Where: Cahaba Lily Center & Cahaba River National Wildlife Refuge in West Blocton

The event kicks off at the Cahaba Lily Center with a keynote from Dr. Larry Davenport. Dr. Davenport is a botanist recognized by many as the foremost authority on the Cahaba lily. Shuttles are provided from West Blocton to the Refuge.

Hargrove Shoals, the largest known stand of Cahaba lilies in the country, is accessible by hiking or canoeing. River levels have risen significantly due to recent rainfall. Please use extreme caution near the river, as swiftly moving water and slippery/uneven rocks make for hazardous conditions.

Other options to see the lilies include the newly opened Piper Mine Recreation Area, which has trails leading to scenic overlooks of the shoals. For those driving, River Trace provides the opportunity to see stands of lilies from your car. Please pull over and do not block the road when looking at the lilies.

Cahaba River Society will not have canoes available this year due to high water and the potential for storms.

**SEWAGE OVERFLOW REPORTED. COMMUNITY ACTION MATTE **SEWAGE OVERFLOW REPORTED. COMMUNITY ACTION MATTERS!**

Yesterday, we received a report of an active sewage overflow on Hwy 280 in front of Grandview Medical Center, close to the Hwy 280 Cahaba River access point.

Following heavy rain, a resident noticed a missing manhole cover with overflow, heavy smell of sewage, a milky white hue to the water, and bits of toilet paper in the trees and along the ground. These are indicators of untreated sewage.

CRS staff inspected the area and saw no indication that the sewage overflow was entering the Birmingham Water Works drinking reservoir. According to our observations, it appears likely that the sewage entered the Cahaba downstream of the dam, avoiding the drinking water supply.

This is a private sewer line and the responsible party has been notified and is responding to the issue.

We need your help! If you see or smell sewage overflows or suspicious water conditions, report it immediately! Reports allow for faster action.

In Jefferson County, report to the Jefferson County Health Department (via: 205-942-0681 or Community@jcdh.org). You should be issued a number that will allow you to check back on the issue.

Let’s protect our water, together.
