Cahaba River Society statement on new "Dirty Water Rule" - Cahaba River Society

The EPA and Army Corps have just adopted regulations that are the most extreme rollback of Clean Water Act protections in this essential law’s 45+ years history. They slashed about in half both the number of stream miles and flow volume that qualify for protection under the Clean Water Act.  These roll-backs will put our beloved Cahaba River, our drinking water, and the health of our rivers and streams in much greater peril.

Under these new regulations more oversight of environmental protection will be shifted to our state agencies, which are inadequately funded and staffed.

The solid foundation of science used to establish the previous Waters of the US rule and it’s overwhelming public support are being tossed aside under the mistaken belief that economic growth and water quality protection are incompatible.  All Alabama citizens will suffer the environmental and economic consequences of these short-sighted and radical reductions in water protection.

Cahaba River Society will continue to support the efforts of the Southern Environmental Law Center and other national environmental organizations working to prevent these damaging regulatory roll-backs.
