“Wonder works. It works to teach us, inspire us “Wonder works. It works to teach us, inspire us and motivate us. And it works to bring us together.

One of the Society’s goals from the start was to make the river’s wonders and joys accessible to all the people of the region – not just the privileged few who owned land along it. No one has done more than Dr. Randy Haddock to achieve that goal.”

-Cahaba River Society Founder Don Elder

In a recent OpEd for the @latimes @brraines writes,

“Two centuries ago, Alabama was first recognized as a land of natural wonders, a place to see things that existed nowhere else.

Remarkably, after generations of indifference and environmental assault, we still hold in our hands one of the nation’s great wildernesses. But the clock is ticking and the loss of species is mounting. The question is, what shall we do with what remains? It is ours to save. Or to lose.”

Our beloved Field Director, Dr. Randy Haddock, is Our beloved Field Director, Dr. Randy Haddock, is retiring at the end of November.

Randy is known as one of the South’s premiere river ecologists and biodiversity protectors, and has devoted 30 years to this one extraordinary river. He began as a volunteer paddling guide when CRS first formed and has been Field Director since 1991.

While we can’t imagine Randy not being part of our daily team, we’re also deeply grateful for all the good he’s done for the River. He’s spearheaded cleanup of all kinds of pollution - sewage, chicken waste, nutrients, sediment – and restoration of river habitat.

Randy has patiently built trust with leaders in government and development, through listening, sharing river science, and collaborating, towards transforming urban growth to better protect the Cahaba.

Knowing that people take care of places they feel connected to, Randy has inspired generations of river advocates through recreation, education, and volunteerism. On a River trip with Randy you might sip Cahaba lily nectar, laugh as he acts out the odd ways mussels lure fish to nurture their young, spend a satisfying, muddy day digging out invasive taro, or find a broken sewer line that he makes sure gets fixed fast.

People from civic, government, and industry realms know this river’s value and want to save it, because Randy has won them over with respect, shared vision for a healthy Cahaba, and lots of river fun.

And if you want to spend time on the Cahaba with Randy, don’t fret - after “retirement” he plans to keep sharing his River love as a CRS consultant and Science Director Emeritus, still bringing folks on canoe trips, restoring habitat, and educating our next generation of River protectors and scientists!

Yesterday our staff tried a technique for eradicat Yesterday our staff tried a technique for eradicating invasive privet using flames at a Freshwater Land Trust property along the Cahaba. We hope this approach will cause the above ground parts to conduct toxins generated by treatment to the roots, weakening the plant. Damage to the above ground parts of the plant both starve the plant of energy and allow infections by pathogens such as bacteria and fungi. These cause death to the whole plant.

Thank to to doctoral candidate Jimmy Stiles who inspired this approach to privet control.

The people of Clay and water protection groups across 3 watersheds are asking for information and public input on a major limestone quarry proposal by Vulcan Materials. The quarry could impact Butler Mountain, one of Jefferson County’s highest peaks, and surrounding areas that are headwaters for sensitive and biologically rich streams - Turkey Creek, the Cahaba River, and Big Canoe Creek.
