Guided Canoe Trip: Perry Lakes Park Oxbow Canoe Tour – March 23rd

Description

We will be paddling between a series of oxbow lakes at Perry Lakes Park. Oxbow lakes are past river channels that have been separated from the current channel through any number of sedimentation events. These lakes are areas that continue to hold water and can be reconnected with the river after flood events. They become oases of life, and Perry Lakes Park is no different. There is a vast array of insect, fish, bird, mammal, reptile, and amphibian life.

You will learn about:

  • How oxbow lakes are formed
  • The oxbow lake ecosystem and native species that call it home
  • Threats to the ecosystem and Cahaba River Society’s work to protect and restore the river

Space is limited! Fill out this form to reserve your spot today!

What to Expect

We will meet at Amped Fitness at the Colonnade at 8 am to carpool and caravan to Perry County. When we arrive at the put-in location, we will choose boats and distribute gear.

There are two short portages on this trip. These portages are only about 20-30 feet but can be muddy, so I recommend close-toed shoes that you don’t mind getting dirty. We will stop for lunch on the river. Please bring a brown bag lunch and at least 1 liter of water. Please do not bring alcohol.

At the conclusion of our trip, we will pack up the gear and carpool and caravan back to the Colonnade. We expect to be back in Birmingham around 4 pm.
