Earth Week: Walking Forest Cleanup in Homewood

Earth Week 2024 > Friday

Friday, April 26th from 9 am to 12 pm

Space is limited. Click here to register a group or individual volunteers.

Friday is FLT Day! We will clean up a Freshwater Land Trust (FLT) conservation property that straddles Shades Creek. Volunteers will hike and clean the forest upstream from the West Oxmoor bridge in Homewood. We will remove trash, debris, and invasive species. This moderately challenging hike will access the river through undisturbed forests without trails.

“Shades Creek CU 1” is a supplemental environmental project (SEP). Freshwater Land Trust acquired this site as a settlement from an enforcement action under the Clean Water Act. Join us to learn about SEP projects and Freshwater Land Trust’s conservation efforts and trail system projects along Shades Creek.

FLT Staff will join us to answer any questions about the importance of land conservation in this riparian corridor and the pending expansions of the Shades Creek Greenway!

Please wear hiking shoes or boots to hike the floodplain. Bring water shoes or rubber boots if you want to help remove in-stream litter. The route to access the property from the parking site is steep.

Each registrant who volunteers at this event will be entered to win a bag of FLT goodies, plus a Trail 2 Waist Pack and Nalgene from REI!

You will:

  • Explore and learn about a riparian (i.e., situated on the banks of a river) forest habitat
  • Get to know nonprofit organizations working to protect and restore critical habitats in Alabama
  • Learn about the important role that riparian forests play in water and habitat quality around one of the country’s most biodiverse waterways

Space is limited. Click here to register a group or individual volunteers.

Thank You to our Friday Partner!
